2015 was as predicted...a pitching year. So many great arms throughout the valley.

A recap of the 2015 year and the Pag Meter All Valley All Star team

Valley Championship Division 1

The Buchanan Bears are the Valley Champions!

Buchanan 15 Clovis 1

WP Conner Loeprich fired a 3 hitter. The big blow was Chandler Bengtson grand slam to center field that made it 6-0. Bengston went 3 for 4 with a grand slam, double and 6 RBIs. Conner was hurt in the Bear pile after the game. He is ok!

Division 2 Champions The Redwood Rangers

Redwood Rangers 4, Hanford Bullpups 0.

The last time the Rangers won the section title was 31 years ago in 1984.

WP Rickie Garcia threw a 2 hitter and the Rangers shutout the Bullpups in 21 straight innings in 3 games. The Rangers won 5-0 on March 18 and 8-0 on April 17 and outscored the Bullpups 17-0.

Eric Charles 1-3, RBI. Cole Daniel, RBI. Kam Trevino 2-3

Division 3 Champions The Garces Rams

Garces Rams 8 Ridgeview Wolf Pack 3

Garces scored 6 runs in the decisive 6th inning. Junior catcher Reece Males, who blasted a two-run triple to the left-center field gap to score Samuel Subia and Hudson Hartley. That turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead.

WP Hudson Hartley also hit a homer.

Division 4 Champions The Firebaugh Eagles

The Pag Meter All Valley All Star team

Pag Meter Co-Teams of the year

The easy pick for team of the year would be the Buchanan Bears. The Bears were the big time slam dunk favorites to be valley champions. If the Bears didn’t win it, that would have been the story. The Pag Meter went with two great stories!

Chavez Titans-Wins the division 5 section title and the first section title in school history for any sport. The Titans went wire to wire going 24-4-1

Firebaugh Eagles-Wins the division 4 section championship and had a school record for wins with 29. Finished 29-7

Pag Meter Co-Coach of the year

Alex Gutierrez-Firebaugh

Did a great job and the Eagles have talent coming back for 2016. Finished with a school record 29-7 and division 4 champions

Scott Neal-Chavez

This class looked special during football season. The Titans had tremendous pitching with a  24-4-1 winning the division 5 section championship

Tom Donald- Buchanan

Even though the Bears were the slam dunk team to win the valley, Donald and his large staff had to work with a team going through injuries and players slumping. Donald has coached 17 years, wins his 5th valley title and moving soon into elite status with 408 wins

Pag Meter Player of the year

Zach Ashford, Senior, Buchanan

In a year where some players struggled in hitting, Zach was not one of them. I always say if you want to play at the next level, you better dominate high school.

Ashford dominated hitting .478. scored 36 runs and had 27 stolen bases. He finished with 54 hits and one hit shy of the Buchanan Bears record for hits in a season held by former Bears legend and hitting coach Jason Donald. Last year Zach hit .402. and scored 30 runs Zach will be playing for the Bulldogs in 2016

Pag Meter’s Most Outstanding & Gamer award

Andrew Hansen, senior, Centennial

Mr Golden Hawk! He did it all every game as a starting pitcher/closer/ or coming up with the big hit playing shortstop. Hansen was old school and would do anything for the G Hawks. The G Hawks Quarterback would pitch every day if needed.  Hit 380, 11 doubles, 6 Home runs, 30 RBI’s. Pitching he went 12-3. 2.58 ERA. 3 saves. 92 IP. 78 K’s. Hansen will be playing at CS Bakersfield

Pag Meter’s Athlete of the year

Rickie Garcia, senior, Redwood

He was also a Pag Meter All star in Football. The WYL player of the year fired a 2-hitter in the division 2 section Championship game win over Hanford 4-0 and was a huge part of winning the title for the 1st time for Rangers since 1984. He hit  .405, .483 on-base percentage, .612 slugging percentage with 35 RBIs. Pitching, Garcia finished with a 10-2 record and a 0.73 ERA with 73 K’s. Next stop is Fresno Pacific

Pag Meter Co-pitchers of the year

Alec Gamboa, senior, Madera

The best lefty in the valley and he was a part time pitcher coming out late from wrestling. So smooth with a tremendous curve ball.  Just think if Gamboa started against TW in the quarterfinals instead of pitching against a weak Grizzlies team, the Coyotes might have made it to Rawhide. We will never know. Gamboa is one of the best athletes the valley has seen in the last 40 years as he was a state caliber wrestler and one of the best wide receivers. He went 7-0 with a 1.20 ERA.  Next stop is at Fresno State and Beiden field

Conner Loeprich, senior, Buchanan

You have to put Loeprich on the list as one of the best to pitch at Buchanan and that list has some great names including Justin Wilson. He started the year with a lower back injury and still went 9-0 with a 1.22 ERA. Last year he went 10-3 with a 0.95 ERA. He fired a 3-hitter in the valley championship game and dislocated his knee in the Bear pyle celebrating the win. Next stop will be St Mary’s

Pag Meter Co-Hitters of the year

Chandler Bengston-Senior, Buchanan

Boy did Chandler get hot at the end of the year. Smacked a game winning homer in the semifinals win over Tulare Western and crushed a grand slam in the valley championship game in the win over Clovis. If you want to see the Grand slam, Go to YouTube and click on Pagmeter.  After that grand slam….game over! If Chandler doesn’t get hot at the end of the year, the Bears don’t win their 5th valley championship. Hit .364, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs and a team-leading 29 RBIs . His next stop will be Columbia of the Ivy League

Nick Zamora, Junior, Madera

One of the best power hitters in the valley. When he connects...It's gone! The big question for his senior year is who will hit behind Zamora? They sure better be good, if not Zamora will lead the state in walks. Zamora crushed a hanging curveball in the quarterfinals for a 3-run homer in the win over Central 3-0

Pag Meter Underclassmen of the year

THOMAS CAMARGO, sophomore, KERMAN

Thomas won this award last year as a freshman. The Lions ace went 10-0 with a fantastic 0.96 ERA.  Last year he went 8-1 with 2.24 ERA. 18 wins heading into his junior year!

Carson Schellenberg, junior, Immanuel

He would be the ace for any school.  ERA at 0.87. That’s a softball ERA! 64 IP, 7-1 record with 75 K’s. He is only a junior and had a great summer so 2016 should be off the charts

The Zack Greinke of the valley. The strike thrower was a huge part of the Bears winning the valley championship. So consistent all year long going 11-1 and an ERA of 1.12. Just missed out on pitcher of the year

Brady Barcellos, junior, Bullard

He turned into the Knights ace when he 1-hit the powerful Centennial Golden Hawks. He finished with a 9-1 with an ERA of 1.77. Brady got hurt late in the year and it would have been fun to see him pitch in the playoffs. Brady is now hitting the weight room so 2016 should be even better!

He was drafted in the 20th round by the Minnesota Twins. Had a 6-3 record and 0.65 ERA.  121 K’s,  40 hits and 24 walks in 73.2 innings. The big question will be, will Colton stay at Fullerton the next 3 years or try to sign early?
