Gone is Sam Metcalf, who graduated and in his 4 years, Metcalf threw for 11,913 passing yards and 140 touchdowns to become the Central Section’s all-time leading passer. New transfer from Redwood Leo Alvarez will take over at QB. Granite Hills comes in 0-1 after losing to powerhouse Kennedy 42-10. Redwood will struggle without Alvarez.

This has the makings of a great game and the Pag Meter will have to watch this one. MW comes off a big win over Garces 21-7. QB Isaiah Salazar threw a 24 yard TD pass and scored on a 3 yard TD.
Last year TW beat MW 27-18 and can the young Mustangs get the offense going because the defense will be very good. TW will be very young but has talent. Junior Robert Ruiz will start at QB. Sophomore running backs David Alcantar and Mason Bernardo are good.. Both defenses are good. MW QB Isaiah Salazar has already played a game and that is huge.

The Knights season starts at Buchanan on Friday because you can’t count the Battle of the Barstow’s 55-6 win over Hoover as a real game. Charles Williams scored 5 TD’s and rushed for 249 yards and Bullard wins for the 14th straight year and the series will end. Buchanan beats the defending valley champions Edison Tigers on the last play of the game and that series will end. The only reason a series ends is because one team feels the other team has outgrown that team and just can’t compete any longer. Hoover is division 3 so that makes sense but Buchanan quitting on Edison doesn’t make sense!! Ezra Owens caught an 11 yard TD from Josh Friesen on the last play of the game for the game winner over Edison. The last time these teams played each other Buchanan beat Bullard in the 1st round of the playoffs. It was a bad loss for the Knights and they remember.
The Pag Meter says that the Knights are a better team but so was Bullard last year in the playoffs. Both teams are very good on defense but the big difference is the passing game and the jury is still out with the Bears passing attack because they will have to throw the ball to win. I can’t see Buchanan running at will like they did against a confused Edison team so to win, the Bears will have to mix it up.

The Knights defense and the Knights speciality teams were the big story. Bullard held the Bears to -26 yards rushing on 18 carries and the Knights punt team and punt return team almost cost the Knights the game.

It’s the TRAC vs the SWYL in a big non league game. Last year the Golden Eagles won in a defense battle 9-2.
The Pag Meter says that this will either be a very close game or CW wears down the G Hawks and wins big. It could be which ever new QB plays better will win this game as well. It is Adrian Martinez vs Cesar DeLeon. They both played well in week 0. The X factors could be the super stars for each team...CW Caleb Kelley vs G Hawks Brandon Robinson. They both can dominate a game.

Last year was the showdown at Ratcliffe Stadium and Edison pulled out a big comeback win 15-14. That win was big for both teams. Bakersfield’s offense was never the same and who knows what happens to Edison if they would have lost. Last year the Tigers prepared all summer to play the Drillers and looked past Buchanan and it worked out.
This year the Tigers played really bad in the loss to Buchanan 16-14 and still should have won. The Tigers defensive game plan was terrible and they lost because of it. After the game the Tigers got the call from Buchanan saying the Bears are done with the series. The Tigers are now fired up to play Buchanan so lets’ hope there is a rematch in the playoffs. Edison is still about 4 weeks away from being dangerous. The Drillers played outstanding and the Drillers threw the ball well with QB KeAyr Gragg who finished with 225 yards.
The Pag Meter says right now the Drillers are a much better team but Edison can match up with Bakersfield with their speed. The Tigers offense will have to control the clock just like Buchanan did to the Tigers. Both teams can score on the big play. One of the best backs in the valley is Tigers William Lee and he only carried 1 time for 10 yards against the Bears. Matt Johnson has to get more involved now or it could be 2013 all over again.
The big question is can the young Tigers offense handle the Drillers cover 0 all out pressure and run right at them?

Now that is Tigers football with a huge win over the Drillers. The Tigers played hard ass, kick ass in your face pressure football. A.J. Smith caught a 30 yard TD pass from Matthews Torres and DeAndre Lockhart scored on a 13-yard TD run

Are the Wildcats a Pag Meter Top 20 team? If so, then this is a must win. Sunnyside will sleep walk thru the NYL so the non league games are big for MOJO.

We do know that Kingsburg can score but can they tackle anybody? The Vikings lost to No 1 in division 3 Hanford 62-33 and now get the No 1 team in division 4. The Trailblazers have the same type speed and has a better defense than Hanford. There is no way that former Vikings coach David Steele gives up 62 points.

This has become a nice rivalry. The Tigers are powerhouse in division 2 and maybe it’s time to move to division 1? The Tigers played very well against a Edison team in the scrimmage but you can’t go by that. Edison just got their helmets the day before. The Cougars beat a young Paso team on the road and a good win for our section. Paso ran at will against the Clovis defense. The Tigers beat up Monache 56-7 and was looking ahead to Clovis. Last year Lemoore beat Clovis 40-27.

The X Factor is the Patriots defense and they better play a good game.

Could the Hawks 19 game winning streak end in Mendota? The last 2 years the Hawks have crushed the Aztecs and it’s because they were bigger faster and stronger. It was that simple. This year it is closer. I’m thinking the Aztecs really want this one!

On a side note...It’s time for the Hawks to start playing a division 4 schedule. Opening up against Firebaugh, Mendota, Fowler and Corcoran won’t cut it any longer unless the Hawks are moving back to D5 soon.

The Lions are a sleeping giant and just like Jay Preuss and the baseball team, Lions football is building a program. Sophomore QB Sean Chambers is going to be one of the best. In week 0 the Lions beat Selma 38-28. For Madera South, this is a must win or it will be a long year because the Stallions have to play in the CMAC. If I’m the Stallions, I’m working on moving to the NYL or the NSL. Madera South got beat up in the loss to Chowchilla 51-28. They looked really good during the summer but back to the wing T.
